Planning your trip around the tides ensures you see the sandbar at its largest. The island is open year-round, but the dry season offers the best conditions for boat rides and beach time.

What is the best season to visit Sumilon Island?

The dry season from November to May provides the best weather.

Clear skies make the 15 to 20-minute boat ride from Bancogon port smoother. January through May typically sees the least rainfall, making it the most reliable window for a beach trip.

What time of day is best for the sandbar?

You should visit during low tide to see the maximum amount of exposed sand.

Low tide often happens from 2 PM onwards. The sandbar naturally shifts its shape and location depending on the tide and season, so late afternoon is generally your best bet.

How do tides affect the sandbar?

High tide covers most of the white sand, leaving only shallow water.

During high tide, you can still swim in the clear aquamarine waters. However, you will not have much dry sand to walk on or sit down.

Is the sandbar open every day?

The sandbar is closed for cleanup one Wednesday a month (usually the third), so check before you go.

Plan your trip for any other day of the week. You must pay a mandatory environmental fee of 50 PHP per person to the local municipality on open days before taking the boat.

How long should I spend at the sandbar?

Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours at the sandbar itself.

This gives you enough time to swim and take photos. If you buy a resort day pass, you can spend the rest of your day at the infinity pool or kayaking in the natural lagoon.

Can I combine this with the Oslob whale sharks?

Yes, guided combo tours often include both attractions in one full day.

Most visitors see the whale sharks early in the morning. They then head to the Sumilon sandbar in the afternoon just as the tide drops.

Yes, it is accessible year-round. However, boat transfers may be rougher, and you are more likely to encounter overcast skies.

Are there chairs on the sandbar?

The sandbar is entirely natural. If you want a lounge chair, you need the Bluewater Resort day pass to access their private beach area.
